LOFTY AMBITIONS Zermatt, a summer and winter sports draw, has 300 days of sun each year, so no great surprise that Julen maxed his Vitamin D intake by swapping walls for windows – not to mention the small matter of the Matterhorn looming spectacularly on his doorstep… It’s barely a fortnight since our Lauren introduced us to the one-man architectural revolution that is Heinz Julen and his mission to reshape the entire Swiss mountain village of Zermatt, and here he his again showing that when it comes to putting your talents to good use, there’s no place like home. There certainly aren’t many places like Julen’s home anyway – not with bent spoons for door handles – and, after the dust has settled from the designer’s infamous parties, Heinz’s former residence is now a catered and serviced chalet for up to six people to rent and indulge in a little rock star posturing. Zermatt, a summer and winter sports draw, has 300 days of sun each year, so no great surprise that Julen maxed his Vitamin D intake by swapping walls for windows – not to mention the small matter of the Matterhorn looming spectacularly on his doorstep. Spoons aside, the interior is all very natural, helped by the real life nature on view but also aided by the choice of materials and furnishings (the clean cloud-like billow of the huge white curtain being a prime example). We await with interest to see which part of this town Julen gets his hands on next… |
