Recently, renowned Japanese designer Keiji Ashizawa unveiled his latest creation, Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park, a seven-story boutique hotel in Tokyo with 25 standard guest rooms and a restaurant on the ground floor, five unique suites, and a rooftop lounge overlooking the lush greenery of Yoyogi Park.
To realize the concept of 'urban recharging', the studio designed an infinity pool to open up the view of the outdoor landscape, a pool bar serving seafood oysters, an Italian restaurant open to the city, and small-scale but comfortable guest rooms. Balconies are an important feature of the hotel's façade, visually connecting to the park and the city through distinctive handrail designs, creating a holistic experience and impression.
The concrete material is used for both the exterior and continued on the interior walls, as well as being the main structural part of the building. A neat, balanced appearance is created through its unique modularity and structural rhythm given to it. This unique perception is also present in the corridors and interior façades, maintaining unity and harmony between inside and outside.
The material and visual contrast between the soft interior and the raw concrete creates a unique spatial atmosphere. The exterior character of the washed concrete facade blends perfectly with the trees of the park and the natural landscape of the hotel, giving the impression that the building seems to have been here for a long time.
Keiji Ashizawa worked with Norm Architects to design new furniture pieces for each space. In addition to this, Keiji Ashizawa conceptualized other detailed elements such as handles and small components for upholstery. The small lounge chairs in the guest rooms, the outdoor lounge chairs on the balconies, the sofas in the pool bar and the lounge chairs with waterproof upholstery were all designed and produced by Japanese furniture brands Karimoku and Ariake.
