Due to the declining birthrate and aging population, the number of vacant houses is increasing, and apartment complexes built during the high-growth period are searching for ways to reinvent themselves. This project proposes a new way of living in public housing complexes. Nikoichi is an innovative design to convert apartment complexes in Osaka(Japan), in which two dwelling units can be reused as one.

In YSLA proposal “Omoya and Hanare”, one unit is named Omoya and the other Hanare and are connected by the exterior veranda. The Omoya, core of the house in Japanese, is the main living space and the Hanare, extra space in Japanese, is a detached area that can be used in several ways; to develop family hobbies, to study, to work, to exercise, as a place to gather or a guesthouse.

A night walk to the Hanare for the traditional Japanese daily bath can refresh your body and mind. These two units complement each other in a way that is flexible to accommodate a diversity of groups and/or individuals. The first two apartments were rented one to a family with three kids, and the second as a share house for three young adults. YLSA Nikoichi copes with the demand of rental apartments that can provide solutions to a divers population.
