Australian design studio Lawless & Meyerson has created a dark and sombre design for an existing two-storey apartment in Sydney's eastern suburbs with its long-standing collaboration with MHNDU. Their intention was to be "dramatic but livable" and they needed to redesign the apartment before an international client and his two young girls moved in. The project calls for bringing the home to Sydney Harbour level through exceptional quality and exquisite detail.
The five-bedroom apartment spans two levels and offers 180-degree views of Sydney Harbour. The lower level has four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a study, while the second level features a living space, dining room and kitchen that extend out onto a terrace next to powder rooms, guest and ensuite rooms, laundry and a separate family room for the children.
The client wanted a tone similar to their previous all-black apartment, but with a more balanced contrast to lighter hues. The idea was to create a sexy and complex interior that allows light to penetrate on a sunny day, but also at night to see the dark harbour and flashing lights. Lawless & Meyerson therefore treated the house as a blank canvas, sculpting delicate interior hues through metallic paint, rich chocolate limestone and light grey wood, balancing light and shade as light for children and darkness for adults.
