The materials used in this family home are strong and durable.

Sussex House creates a dialogue between the building and the harsh climate conditions near the coast, with the existing concrete plan providing residents with a sense of protection and embracing their surroundings. A large area of glass elements frames the views and connects the interior and exterior, acting as a gateway and reinforcing the resemblance to the outside.

The three-storey house, designed and built by McKimm, uses bold, open and uninterrupted views to connect the home and its various areas, both inside and outside. Although linear in form and integrated with the streetscape, layers of texture are introduced into the interior, adding depth through subtle contrast.

Enter through the impressive swivel front door to feel the scale and grandeur of the home from the very beginning and throughout the home. Through these Spaces, there is a deliberate sense of travel and discovery, with large openings inviting curiosity. Each space has a similar shade of grey, charcoal and dark blue, which is then balanced by the insertion of brass and wood as warm features. Exposed concrete, natural stone, bluestone and porcelain hues are all illuminated by natural light, linking the home to its surroundings. The depth reveals and further enhances the sense of drama and expresses the transition between Spaces.
